As a blogger, it can be challenging to not only find time to create new content but then go back and analyze the performance of that content. Even though it’s much more exciting to write a new blog post or plan a photoshoot for an upcoming collaboration, it’s important to put time aside at the end of each month to check the performance of your blog with analytics reports. By analyzing Google Analytics metrics, you can get a better insight on the performance of your blog and understand how to optimize your content.

All Traffic: Channels

Google Analytics channels are groups of mediums and sources put together to provide an overall look at how traffic visits to your website. There are numerous default channels you can see depending on what mediums and sources you are using to promote yout blog. Analyzing this information will help you better understand where most of your traffic comes from and which channels need improvement to promote your blog. With most Google Analytics metrics, it’s useful to compare data to the previous date range to see the difference in your results and if any changes you made during this time are reflected in these numbers.

Social: Network Referrals

For most bloggers, I would assume that a large percentage of your traffic is coming from social media. That’s why it’s important to take a closer look at network referrals to identify the platforms where people engage with your content and the best performing content on each platform. For example, I spend most of my time trying to create the perfect feed and gain new followers on Instagram. But what’s my top performing platform? Pinterest! And what’s second? Nope, still not Instagram. It’s Facebook! This shows me that I should be spending more time promoting my blog on these platforms because my audience is engaging with my content there. I could also look at this data as a way to adjust my social strategy to better use other networks that are not bringing in as much traffic.

Social: Landing Pages

The landing pages report shows you where visitors to your website first enter from social and which landing pages are the best performing. Think of this as a free content marketing tool by helping you understand what type of content your audience engages with most, categories you should include in the future and how you can repurpose old content that continues to perform well. As satisfying as it is to see the best of any Google Analytics metrics, you should always review where you can make improvements and find new ways to promote content that isn’t performing as well.

Audience: Mobile

In this Google Analytics report it shows us the number of users by device. You might not have to check out these metics every month but they are still important to review especially if you’ve never had a chance to see which devices are being used by your readers. When we spend so much time designing our blog, we want to believe that everyone views it on a desktop. What type of device are most of your readers using? I can assume that most of your traffic is coming from mobile devices. If this is true, it’s vital that your website is mobile friendly.

However, the more time you spend in Google Analytics, the more comfortable you will feel navigating through all the data.
